Give me your opinion of Kate, Petruchio, Bianca, Lucentio. Speak to their character, motivations and why they are the way they are.
Kate: I think that she acts like such a shrew because she feels that her father loves her sister more than her. She says that she does not like her father bringing different suiters to her while her sister can get any man that she chooses. She does
not think that she is softer, weaker ect. than a man. While some of her opinions may be true, she reacts to it in completly the wrong way. At the end of the play, she changes because she realizes that when she submits to her husband, he submits to her as well. At the end of the play, her sister and her change places in their fathers attention. Kate is now his pride and joy, the place that she wanted to be not so long ago.
Petruchio: In the beginning of the play, he only wants to marry Kate for the money. The best proof of that is when Kate is walking on the roof, close to her death. His only reaction is "My twenty thousand crowns!" Not the quite the reaction that you were expecting, is it? It seemed to me that as Kate started to obey him, their relationship started to thrive. Because, as I said before, she submits and then Petruchio. He is cruel to her in the beginning of the play(forcing her to marry him, taking her from her home, making her ride on a donkey, not helping her to the castle, taking her food away when it is obvious that she is starving, and refusing to give her the clothing after he says that he would) He does this because he knows that before she will love him, she has to respect him and obey him. Much like training a horse in my opinion. Maybe he is cruel, but in the end they have a loving and honest relationship.
Bianca: Kates younger sister is quite the little snot. She is mean to Kate in private and a goody two shoes in front of their father. The only reason she wants Kate to get married is so that she herself can get married (not because she wants her sister to find true love and be happy) At the last wedding scene, she pouts when it appears that her sister is the envy of the towns people instead of her. She is a person that has to have everything her way or else she gets mad and sulks.
Lucentio: He is the man who falls in love at first site. He falls in love with Bianca's pretty face, not who she truly is. He realizes his folly at the wedding scene. He thinks he has himself a mighty fine catch, much better than her shrew of a sister. Until, he loses the bet and realizes that some of her sister's spirited attitude must have rubbed off onto his sweet, little princess. Of course he gets mad at her when he also has himself to blame for not paying attention to her attitude, just her big blue eyes and freckles.
